Parkdale Fire Station No. 11

Built in 1923 and designated as a heritage building in 1996, Fire Station No. 11 is an interesting example of the typical architecture of the era. Formally recognized by Ontario as one of 3 surviving pre-1930's fire stations. It is an example of a fire station that incorporates pre-1930s fire-fighting technology and reflects the period when the Ottawa fire department evolved from a poorly equipped fire fighting force to a professional fire department. The most distinctive feature of the building is the tower which was used to hang and dry the wet fire hoses.

The building was used as an active fire station until 1986, after which it housed a food bank and artists' studios and galleries. Currently Fire Station No. 11 houses Alcea Technologies, an IT Staffing and Software Development company. The building is part of the collective memory of the Hintonburg Community and is included in the historical walking tours of the area.
